About Mr Rice - A Brief History

Page history last edited by Russell 9 years, 10 months ago

My full name is Russell Rice, and I am originally from the Shoreline area north of Seattle. I graduated from Shorecrest High School in 1987 where I was actively involved in the band and track & field programs.

I attended Pacific Lutheran University, graduating in 1991 with a degree in Business Administration. My most impressionable experiences in my college years came during my study-abroad semester; in winter and spring of 1990 I lived and studied in Tallinn, Estonia, which was then still part of the Soviet Union.

Following PLU I was employed as a program coordinator at a small software company in Seattle. Essentially, I played with databases all day and occasionally traveled the U.S. to train clients on the system. The software generated patient documentation for physical and occupational therapists.

By 1998 I had completed a second Bachelor's degree, this one in English, and earned a Master of Education degree. Both of those programs were through the University of Washington. I immediately took a position at Bothell High School in the Northshore School District, and taught there for seven years. At Bothell I coached track and field, announced the football games at the district stadium, taught a variety of English courses, and advised the yearbook staff. During summers I traveled the world, sometimes with students.

After seven years at Bothell I married and moved overseas with my wife to teach at Brent International School in Manila, Philippines. There I was happy to teach English Literature courses in the International Baccalaureate program, coach track and field, and travel around southeast Asia searching for the perfect combination of cuisine, culture, surf, and sand. (Ao Nang near Krabi, Thailand came close, but lots of tourists.)

We returned to the U.S. after two enjoyable years teaching in the Philippines. Shortly after our return we welcomed our first child Adeline in October of 2007. In May of 2009 our second child, Broderick, was born. I now teach English/Language Arts at Steilacoom High School.

  • TRAVEL - I have led many students on trips through Europe, and try to travel internationally at least once every year. I've been through Europe, Peru, Bolivia, Morocco, and many locations in southeast Asia. My most recent trip with students was through Italy and Greece
  • MUSIC - I am passionate about music. My tastes range from popular music to classical, but I steer clear of rap, hip-hop, and country.
  • THE OUTDOORS - I love the outdoors; going outside is such a pleasant escape I could safely say it's often spiritual. During winters I enjoy snowshoeing and downhill skiing. During fall and summer I try to get into the hills for hiking and camping. My favorite areas are the Phelps Creek/Spider Gap basin in the North Cascades and the High Divide Loop out of the Sol Duc River in Olympic National Park. The Enchantment Lakes basin is rather awe-inspiring as well.
  • FILM - I don't watch as many films nowadays with two youngsters in the house, but I do enjoy good film-making, and generally steer clear of cheesy blockbuster movies.
  • FOOD - Can't live without it, and I love it. Crazy recipes, spicy dishes, I'll try most anything (unless it's live baby octopus or fugu, because those can kill you).
