RnJ Act II Events

Scene 1

  • M and B look for Romeo
  • M calls for R, making fun of his “love”
  • M thinks by commenting on Rosaline’s body, Romeo will appear
  • R stays hidden
  • They talk a lot and finally leave

 

Scene 2

  • R sees J emerge onto the balcony
  • R compares J to the rising sun – she’s that important in his world!
  • He’s so in love
  • Speaks more poetic stuff about Juliet’s face
  • Calls J a “bright angel”
  • “Romeo, Romeo. Wherefore art thou Romeo?” = famous quote about why he has to have the name Montague
  • “That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet” = ANOTHER FAMOUS QUOTE
  • Juliet claims that she loves R despite his Montague name
  • R reveals himself to her
  • J is surprised to see him – it’s difficult to access the Capulet estate
  • R says he loves her so much there is no barrier to hold him back
  • R says night will hide him from the Capulets
  • J is a bit embarrassed about her confession of love when she didn’t know he was listening
  • J asks R to say he loves her
  • She thinks she should have been more of a “difficult catch”
  • R swears he loves her
  • R wants to exchange vows of love
  • J says her love is like the sea
  • The nurse interrupts and J tells R to wait
  • J says she’ll send a messenger to R tomorrow
  • The messenger will ask R where they should meet
  • The nurse calls some more
  • J goes back in …
  • And comes back out – how come she can’t just stay inside?
  • R says she should send a messenger by 9am
  • They flirt – more poetry about R being a bird
  • “Parting is such sweet sorrow” = FAMOUS QUOTE
  • R says he’ll seek the friar

 

Scene 3

  • Friar is gardening, watching the sunrise
  • Speaks poetically about the sunrise
  • Speaks about “mother” earth that feeds plants, animals
  • He raises some herbs with dangerous effects
  • R enters
  • Friar is surprised to see him so early
  • R confesses Rosaline is old news
  • “Feasting with mine enemy” = R has been at the C’s house
  • R confesses his love for J, and her love for him
  • The friar is REALLY surprised
  • Friar recalls R’s deep previous love for Rosaline
  • Friar hopes the upcoming marriage will help the Montague-Capulet feud

 

Scene 4

  • M still thinks R is about Rosaline
  • M and B reveal that TYBALT has issued a challenge to Romeo
  • M insults Tybalt behind his back, but we learn he’s a great fighter
  • R enters
  • R and M exchange dirty jokes – “flower” and “pump” and such
  • They talk more … and more … and more
  • Finally, B tells him to shut up!
  • NURSE enters in DISGUISE
  • M can’t SHUT UP!!!!
  • He makes lots of jokes at the expense of religion
  • “Saucy!” – but the nurse’s comments are dirty too
  • More bad jokes about “weapons” being out
  • Nurse talks to R
  • Nurse asks if his aim is true love and honest
  • R says it is
  • R sends nurse back – J is to meet him at the church later that day
  • Nurse reveals Paris also seeks J, and insults Paris behind his back

 

Scene 5

  • J is worried the nurse hasn’t returned
  • The nurse toys with J by looking sad and complaining of aches from the walk
  • Continues to toy w/ J – won’t say anything
  • Nurse keeps changing the subject
  • J is to go to church, meet R, and marry

 

Scene 6

  • Friar warns what happens to this kind of fiery love – it ends violently
  • J arrives
  • R speaks poetically when he sees her
  • J replies poetically – and says her love has grown even since last night
  • Friar takes them in to marry
