Poetry Writing - Assignment Two
The poems “Young”, “Hanging Fire”, “Song of the Open Road”, and “The Road Not Taken” all address a specific time in life. The first two are about adolescence, and the latter two talk about choosing a direction in life.
This poem assignment asks you to focus on a specific time in a person’s life, whether it’s infancy, first steps, first day of school, first time you rode a swing by yourself, first time driving a car, choosing a college, losing that first boyfriend/girlfriend.
Your goal is to capture the feelings surrounding that moment in a person’s life. The requirements for this poem are:
- Write in first person
- Develop a rhyme scheme that repeats in at least two stanzas
- Make your poem at least twelve lines long
- Capture an important moment in the life of a person
- Capture a clear theme in the poem – What is life like at that moment?
- Capture a clear tone from the speaker
